During the night of 22–23 January 2026, Kashmir received its first heavy snowfall of the year. Both the upper reaches and the plains of Kashmir witnessed a good spell of snowfall.

Western disturbances are causing light to moderate snowfall across the Kashmir Valley, with significant accumulation in higher areas like Gulmarg, Sonamarg and the Pir Panjal Range.
Kashmir is experiencing Chilla-i-Kalan—the harshest 40-day winter period (December 21 to January 30). During this time, there is a high chance of heavy snowfall.
